Do not update your EA client to 6.0.1.7! This will cause numerous problems that will inhibit your ability to play RunUO servers!
If you need to update your client so you can, for example, enter Hythloth, you'll need to make sure all the following statements are true, if you're on a Windows-running machine:
*Windows Installer 3.0 or greater is present on your system
*You're using the latest version of ConnectUO Desktop or UOGateway to connect to Mystical Unicorn
*You've patched MU
*You've not installed RunUO 2.0
*You have not installed custom map information into your UO program folder
*You possess .Net Framework 2.0
*Your EA client is patched to 6.0.1.6
Given, even if all of the above are true, there are still glitches. For instance, differences in map information have totally wrecked New Haven as well as the ruins of "old" Haven.
How do I acquire these numerous and intimidating updates so that my Ultima Online enjoyment can reach its maximum potential, assuming that I am using a Windows operating system?[/i]
You'll need to run a Windows Update so that your Installer information can function correctly. The installer takes a huge part in any activity involving most other updates, so it is what you'll probably need to do first. If you run a Windows Update and there are no optional or critical updates available, your installer should function correctly. To run a Windows Update, you'll need to locate an icon bearing that name in either your Start Menu, your Control Panel, or you can just go to www.microsoft.com and visit the Windows Update page, which will function equally well.
Microsoft's .Net Framework has been upgraded repeatedly in the last few years and RunUO hasn't been keeping up. The version that RunUO and CUOD require is 2.0, which is quite old but still widely used. This is the version of .Net Framework you will need. If you're running Windows Vista, the framework is already present in the Operating System's data, but RunUO will not recognize it. You can upgrade .Net in Vista but I'm afraid that no amount of updating or reverse updating will help you. This is the situation I find myself in. ConnectUO Desktop will function on Vista but RunUO 1.0 will not (but you won't need it unless you plan on running a server).
If you're still using an old version of ConnectUO or UOG or if you're connecting via Razor, you'll need the latest CUOD or UOG to be safe. This (CUOD) is easily acquired. Once you have it, you'll need to locate Mystical Unicorn on the list. Either do some scrolling or enter "mystical unicorn" in the search input bar.
Once you've entered MU into your favorites in the CUOD page, you can first click Vote (because more votes for MU is a good thing, and you can give one a week), then Yes to verify, then go back to your favorite servers list and click Play.
Upon clicking Play, it will automatically patch MU. You'll only need to let it do this once. Once the patch is completed, MU should open in a game client window.
Each time you try to play MU from CUOD, it will attempt to patch again. And again. And again. Just wait for the patch window to appear and click Cancel. CUOD will likely crash but it will only take a moment to click OK and let it close. During this time, MU will load normally.
If you have a very old client version from EA, you'll need to update to Mondain's Legacy. On www.uo.com is a list of appropriate download mirrors that will give you the client (Ultima Online, the entire program) free of charge. EA's list may be glitchy, so use my list of client download mirrors instead. More recent clients, such as Gold Edition and Kingdom Reborn, may not work if you're trying to play RunUO servers (MU is a RunUO server).
It was announced by the head programmers at RunUO that they will not be supporting Kingdom Reborn or any later client, due to "incompatibility," but, in my opinion, everyone at RunUO is lazy. They could do it, they just make up excuses.
Once you have Mondain's Legacy, you will likely need to patch. Most people who've played "OSI" are familiar with the AutoPatch utility that runs before you can get into the game but can also run independently. Inside your Ultima Online program folder, you'll find a .exe file called Autopatch. Run it, and let it get to 6.0.1.6. Once it's finished with 6.0.1.6, discontinue it. If you have no cancel button, click the Close button (the x). I'm sure Geezer could explain a more proper method.
Once all of this is done, and assuming you're on a version of Windows between 2000 and Vista, you should be able to play MU without any glaring problems.
If you should experience any unusual problem trying to get MU to work, please leave a message here. I'll help if I can.
