I know, I know, I'm like the poster child for player-run events but I'm not exactly a little kid on some advertisement -
oh wait, yes I am.
And now Roh, the 10 year old kid who pwnzorz the bagballzorz is going to rant about finding a solution to events.
Here's what we do, see. We ask the staff in a friendly, amiable way to give players a way to run events. Simple methods would be to give players public access to places like the paintball or skullball arenas and put out a Game Purchase Stone that will allow a player to buy and run a game. Perhaps, if he can't stick around, there can be a transfer button that gives someone else access to the game's operational stone.
If the cost of running an event is high, offer a second option that minimizes the cost of running the game but requires all of the players to pay a fee to play.
Next, throw in a reward based on the number of people participating and/or the amount of gold paid by the operator and the participants.
Then you get your guild and/or buddies together and you create events of your own. Maybe you want to take people through the Track, which can be accessed in Malas if I recall, or maybe you want to have a scavenger hunt or a massive MD-busting spree - once you have the ideas, all you have to do is run them. If you want to run them, offer to do so occasionally on public chat. "Anyone want to have a footrace at the track? The one with all the hidden teleporters?" Maybe you don't even provide prizes - who cares? People just want to play together, but prizes will attract more players.
Lastly, if your events are expensive (I know MD sprees are), put together an event fund. Raise money for it by holding special auctions (be sure to note that the money from the auction is going directly toward events and also note who donated the items to be auctioned), or by doing group hunts or group champs. Raising money can be stimulating, just like clearing out entire dungeons can be... wallet-inflating.
If you want events, you have to make them happen. Don't expect other people to do all the work for you.
